3rd-Party Solution :: iAlertU
Posted: April 13, 2006

This is honestly one of the coolest applications I have ever seen! In some parts of the world, laptop theft is a real problem. In Los Angeles, for example, it's more common for a laptop to be stolen these days than a cell phone. Thanks do a developer out of California, this problem could become less of a problem... at least for Mac users.

iAlertU is like a car alarm for your laptop. Currently, it's still a beta product, but the full release is due out sometime later this month or early next. As a beta product, it only works for 10 minutes at a time, and only on a MacBook Pro (the full version should support other Macs).

Using iAlertU is very easy. Simply download the application here, and run it from your Applications folder. You can tell when it's active because you will see a small icon in the menu bar that looks like a keychain remote for your car, as shown on the left below:

Now that the application is running, you need to activate it. To do this, just press the "Play/Pause" button on your Apple Remote. You will hear a single chirp, and the icon in your menu bar will turn red. Now, when your MacBook Pro is moved at all, a loud alarm will sound, and your screen will flash, attracting lots of attention. To disarm the alarm, simply press the "Menu" button on the Apple Remote. You will hear two chirps, indicating that it is safe to move your MacBook Pro.

When the full version of iAlertU is available, there will be other features added, such as the ability to adjust the sensitivity, and much more. The price will be $9.95, and for most, well worth the money.
