iWeb :: Publish Locally
Posted: March 31, 2006

As I mentioned in Monday's Mac Tip (iWeb :: Overview), Apple prefers that you publish your iWeb site to a .Mac account. That's great in an ideal world, but not everyone has a .Mac account. If you're one of them, are you out of luck? No way. You can publish anywhere. Here's how:

The first thing you need to do is publish your iWeb site locally. To do this, go to File | Publish to a Folder... From here, you will be prompted to browse to a location, as well as enter a URL, as shown below:

Entering a URL really only helps if you are publishing a blog (it's used for the feed). If you aren't blogging on your site, don't worry about entering anything. Once you have chosen your location, hit "Choose". It will take a minute or two to publish, depending on how large your site is. Once your site is done, you will receive a confirmation that allows you to view the site (as shown below):

Notice that there are a few features that won't work unles you publish to a .Mac account.

Now that you have published your site locally, you can now do one of two things with it: 1) use this to test your site before publishing live, and 2) upload the entire site to another hosting company. If you are not publishing to a .Mac account, you will (of course) need to work with another hosting company such as GoDaddy.com or ValueWeb. Simply upload the resulting folder's contents to your hosting company (per their instructions), and you're done!
