Mac OS X :: Give Your Terminal some Pizzazz!
Posted: March 20, 2006

For some, using Terminal is a once-in-a-while occasion. For others, it's daily. I use Terminal a few times a week myself. One of the things I don't like about Terminal is that it looks plain... white screen with black text (see below):

Did you know that you can give your Terminal a little pizzazz?! It's easy too. Simply open Terminal (under Applications > Utilities in the Finder), and go to Terminal > Window Settings. From the drop-down box, choose "Color", and you will get a new window that has the following options:

You will notice that there are several different color options: Cursor, Selection, Normal Text, Bold Text and Background (note that you can also choose to set an image as your background). Simply choose the color scheme you want to use (either by using the defaults found in the drop-down box just above the color options or by choosing them manually), and you're set.

By changing your options, you are changing the colors for THIS instance of Terminal. When you Quit Terminal and re-open it later, it will revert to the original boring colors. If you want your colors to last, hit the "Use Settings as Defaults" button at the bottom once you have changed them to your liking.

Here is what mine looks like now:
