iPhoto :: Setting up a Photocast
Posted: February 02, 2006

"Photocasting" (new to iPhoto in iLife '06) is like Podcasting, only with photos instead of audio or video. Another way to think about it is this: it's like sharing your photos, but rather than sharing them with others on a LAN (local area network), you share them with anyone who has subscribed to your photocast, regardless of location.

The first step in creating your own Photocast is to create a new photo album in iPhoto. To do this, click on the [+] in the lower left-hand corner, and create a new album. One thing to note is that the name of the album will be used and seen by everyone subscribing, so make sure it's something meaningful.

Once you have created your new album, you need to populate it with photos. This is done by simply dragging and dropping from your main Library into the new album.

Now, you are ready to publish. In the bottom portion of the iPhoto application, there is a toolbar of buttons. With the new album highlighted on the left, click the "Photocast" button at the bottom, which looks like this:

You will be prompted to choose a size for your photos (as well as possible password-protection), as shown below:

If you have subscribers (or potential subscribers) that are on dial-up connections, then you may want to choose small. Otherwise, choose what you will. When you have chosen, choose the "Publish" button.

Once it is done publishing for the first time, iPhoto will offer to send out an announcement notice to family, friends and colleagues. It will look like this:

You will also notice that the feed URL is listed on this screen as well. Be sure to write this down somewhere for future reference.

In order to subscribe to this newly-created Photocast, subscribers can either use the latest version of iPhoto (part of iLife '06), or another RSS reader (I must say that iPhoto is strongly recommended). To subscribe, simply go to the address listed on your "Your Album has been published to .Mac" screen. iPhoto will ask if you want to subscribe. Choose "Subscribe", and you are done.
