3rd-Party Solution :: Getting a DVD to Your iPod - UPDATE!
Posted: December 28, 2005

On December 21, I showed you a diagram of how to get video from a DVD to your 5th generation iPod. It involved ripping the DVD, converting it to MPEG-4, and then using QuickTime Pro to convert it into M4V format (which is readable by your iPod). Recent discoveries have led me to revise this statement, and to not just correct the original Mac Tip of the Day, but to create an entirely new one, also serving as a reminder.

Below is the revised diagram, showing that the process is the same, without having to go through QuickTime Pro. On a PowerBook G4, this literally saves you about 2-3 days worth of processing per movie!

As an alternative to using HandBrake, Mark Fleser (a Mac Tip of the Day subscriber) found a new application called HandBrake Lite for us to check out. As you can see from the screenshot below, it offers a much simpler way of extracting DVD content for your iPod.
