iTunes :: Convert your Music It isn't enough to just rip your music iTunes and listen. You may have better quality audio by choosing one audio format over another. MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF are four common formats. They are all different, and all have their place. I won't go into the details of what makes each one better over others here (you can look these formats up on Wikipedia). What I will show you is how to rip a CD in a specific format, and how to change from one format to another... right in iTunes. First, let's explore ripping. When you rip a CD in iTunes, it will use AAC by default. In most cases, this is fine. If you would like to use another format, open your iTunes Preferences. Then click on the "Advanced" tab, and then "Importing". Here, you will see several format options (see below):
Simply change to the format you want to use, and then rip your CD. Now let's talk about changing the format once you have already added a file to iTunes. This may not happen very often, but it does happen. One of the more common reasons I need to change formats is when sing Final Cut. Final Cut doesn't handle MP3 or AAC audio files very well because of the compression that they use. Instead, Apple recommends that you use the AIFF format (because it uses no compression). To do this, I would go back into my iTunes Preferences and change the format to AIFF (as explained above). Now, I simply select the song I want to convert in my library, then under the Advanced menu, choose to convert the file to AIFF (see below):
